How to Survive and SOAR with These 3 Essentials
Want to succeed in your endeavor? How to survive and SOAR … here are three essentials you MUST have to survive and SOAR.
Like the day my engine quit in my 6-passenger airplane 5,000′ above the ground, there are Unexpected times that reveal with crystal clarity the essentials of success.
Pilots practice what business owners and leaders must do: Aviate, Navigate, Communicate… and in that order.
When The Unexpected happens, there’s no time for clowning around, no time for guesswork, no time to tweet or post. You are in the midst of chaos and uncertainty. Success at that moment means…
- Not crashing (Aviate)
- Redirecting your plan (Navigate)
- Getting accurate feedback. (Communicate)
And in that order!
Move from chaos and uncertainty to calm and control. Here’s how to survive and SOAR:
The first essential is getting control of the immediate situation. First, before anything else, get control of the situation. No blaming! No backwards analysis. No discussion. No drawing boards. Those will put you in a tailspin! Just keep the plane flying. Get the basics!
Were you hit with cash flow issues? It doesn’t matter at the moment why you have cash flow issues (later it will), it only matters that you get your finances flying straight and level so you don’t crash. Immediately stop spending more than you make. Pretty basic. If you’re not making any money, then immediately begin offering a product or service that will generate income. Get control of the basics. Pretty basic.
Only after getting a grip on the basics at the moment, navigate. Get a sense of direction. Use what I call:
The ABCs of Navigation.
- A) Know where you Are. List the assets, resources, gifts, talents, abilities that you currently have at your fingertips.
- B) Know where you want to Be. Write out what it will look like when The Unexpected has passed. Envision a successful outcome and picture it in detail.
- C) Plan your Course to get there. List the steps, one by one, you will take to get from where you Are to where you want to Be.
It is essential to have someone from the outside to see your situation, to know where you are and where you want to be, and to give you accurate feedback.
The key here is that the feedback you get is from someone not emotionally involved. You don’t want people who tell you what they think you want to hear. Unhelpful! Dangerous!
You don’t want people who have a vested interest in you personally, because they will steer you for their own benefit.
You want feedback that’s clear and accurate, like the instruments on the instrument panel, and the air traffic controller on the ground. As a mentor, Jane Atkinson, says, “It’s hard to read the label from inside the jar.” You need the benefit of someone outside to help you know if you’re on the course you set, to offer guidance if you’re in a fog, to encourage you when you doubt.
Aviate. Navigate. Communicate.
If you start your endeavor with these three essentials in mind, and in this order…
- Aviate – Get the basics
- Navigate – Get direction
- Communicate – Get feedback
…you’ll have a great chance for success. And when The Unexpected hits you hard, head on, (and it will) then these three essentials will give you the best shot of keeping your endeavor alive, and you WILL fly again, and you WILL soar to new heights.
I hope you’ll leave a comment! And SHARE this with someone you know who’s got a lot on their plate.
You want to do more than survive. You want to SOAR!
