Typical question: Do you see the glass as half full or half empty? This categorizes you as either optimist or pessimist, as positive or negative.
Why are you even answering that question with one or the other?
If you’re really going to navigate through the complexities of life, why limit yourself to those two options?
Take a quick mental inventory of everything you can do with that glass filled half-way with water (and who said it’s water?).
Here’s a quick list of possibilities:
- Fill it up!
- Pour it out and put something else in it.
- Pour what you’ve got into a smaller glass so it’s obviously full.
- Get a bigger glass and confuse people with, “Is the glass a quarter full, or three-quarters empty?”.
- Eat salty chips and drink the water. Then eat more chips. Get more water. Repeat.
- Put a fighting beta fish in it.
- Stir in a packet of kool-ade. Put a stick in it, and freeze.
- Put a penny in it, place a 3×5 card over the top, turn it upside, place on table, pull card out.
- Put a floating candle it. Find several more glasses, fill half, place candles. Get romantic!
- Water a plant.
- Put some rocks and dirt in it and plant a plant.
- Use it as a topic for a blog post to make a game-changing point!
And here’s the point: Think in terms of possibilities!
Answers to challenges in life are seldom simple. Usually there are more than two options. You must change your thinking from either-or to “What are the possibilities here?”.
Try that with a problem you’re facing right now. Write out/brainstorm a list of possibilities. Make it as long as you can. You might be surprised at a new direction this gives you!
Next time someone asks you, “Do see the glass as half full or half empty?”, tell them, “Neither one, man. That glass has a world of possibilities!”
